A council committee has voted to prohibit vehicle noise above 96 decibels – about four times beyond normal car engines.
It will also begin testing a new photo-radar-style device (dubbed the noise snare) to nab loud motorists.
The device costs $112,500 but Calgary is getting one for free as the Edmonton inventor’s first client.
Noise problems are Calgary’s number three bylaw complaint but it’s nearly impossible to punish violating drivers.
Many Beltline residents have complained to the city about bikers and drivers who often blare their engines along 17th Avenue S.W. and other streets.
Some motorcyclists say their loud pipes help them stay safe by alerting nearby cars and pedestrians.
