The southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail at McKenzie Lake Blvd. remained closed Saturday morning as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigated an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and a woman in critical condition.

Police responded to a call of shots fired around 9:15 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Copperfield Blvd. in the city’s southeast.

Shortly after that, police were alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the area.

Officers used the HAWCS helicopter to monitor the situation, described by investigators as a “high speed instance.” Eventually the vehicle, which had been driving erratically, came to a stop on Deerfoot Trail at McKenzie Lake Blvd.

Shots were fired after officers went to approach the vehicle; it’s unclear how many shots were fired and by who, but police say no officers were injured.

ASIRT is now leading the investigation; the Calgary Police Service forensic, homicide and traffic hit and run units were also called to the scene.

“Right now details are limited about the connection between the original call of shots being fired and the vehicle in question,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Wyatt. “ASIRT will conduct its own investigation into what happened here last night.”

Deerfoot Trail has now reopened.
