Saskatoon businesses cash in on Valentine’s Day

Watch the video above: Saskatoon businesses benefit as couples celebrate Valentine’s Day.

SASKATOON – Love is in the air, it’s Valentine’s Day. People all over the city and the country for that matter were under the gun today, looking to pick up a little something for their loved ones to say they heart them.

There were more than 7.8 million couples living in Canada at last count. Eighty per cent of them were married and 20 per cent were living common-law. All that love means a lot of cash for retailers and a lot of pressure.

Valentine’s Day has been proven to be a last minute holiday.

“It’s the busiest day of the year, single day, we have line ups galore all day long,” said Geraldine Franklin, the manager at Harden & Huyse Chocolates.

According to an Insightrix Valentine’s Day survey, Saskatchewan residents mostly turn to traditional gift ideas, 26 % to candy and chocolate, and 19 per cent to flowers.

“I wouldn’t hesitate that girls like to give guys flowers also but I would easily say it’s 80 per cent of the men coming in to get flowers for their girls,” said Carla Scharback, the owner of Blossoms Florist.

And for those reaching even deeper into their pockets, diamonds are a girls best friend.

“Everybody always has a budget, no matter what they’re buying but for jewelry sometimes it’s just the right piece comes along and the budgets out the window,” said Alexandria Koch with GMG Jewellers.

Chocolates, flowers and even gifts are things you can wait last minute to buy but making a reservation at a restaurant, not so much.  A note for next year:  book early.

Almost 30 per cent of the participants polled in the Insightrix Valentine’s Day survey ‘love’ Valentine’s Day, while 65 per cent think it’s a nonsense holiday.
