VIDEO: Video of US forces capturing terror suspect al-Libi
TORONTO – Newly released surveillance video shows the capture of one of FBI’s most wanted terror suspects.
Abu Anas al-Libi was captured on Oct. 5 in Libya during a military raid and now facing charges in the deadly 1998 al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa.
In a video obtained by The Washington Post Monday, it appears that U.S. forces in a white van pull up next al-Libi’s car parked in front of his home in Tripoli. The Americans rush the car with guns in hand while another van arrives to block any chance of escape. The commandos pull al-Libi out of his car and into their van.
It is presumed the video was filmed by a surveillance camera near al-Libi’s home last October.
Known as one of al-Qaida‘s early computer experts, al-Libi is charged in a Manhattan indictment in bombings that killed 224 people, including a dozen Americans.
He is accused of helping plan and conduct surveillance for the bombings of U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and is believed to have used an early-generation Apple computer to assemble surveillance photographs in Kenya.
Al-Libi has been on the FBI’s most wanted terrorists list since it was introduced shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. A reward of $5 million was offered for his capture.
He is the sixth man to appear in a Manhattan court to face charges in the embassy bombing attacks. The other five are serving life sentences.
