10 new schools to be built in Calgary

CALGARY – The province has unveiled plans to fund the construction of ten brand new schools in Calgary.

Premier Redford made the announcement at a news conference at Glenmeadows Elementary School on Monday morning.

There will be six new public schools, one new francophone school and three new Catholic schools.

Seven of the schools will be built in suburban neighbourhoods in the city’s southeast or southwest, while three will be constructed in the northwest suburbs.

In total, the ten new schools will house an estimated 7,600 students.

The province says the new schools will have advanced ventilation systems that enhance air quality and circulation – as well as spaces for informal, project-based and collaborative learning.

In addition, the province also announced plans to modernize The Calgary Arts Academy.

The school will relocated to the building currently occupied by the Weston Bakery at Stampede Park.

Last spring, Premier Alison Redford promised to build 50 schools across the province and modernize another 70 facilities.

The modernization of The Calgary Arts Academy is the 70th and final modernization project to be announced.

Calgary’s ten new schools bring the total of new facilities set to be built in Alberta at 42.

The province says the remaining eight new schools will be announced this month.
