Seniors released from hospital after Melfort, Saskatchewan apartment fire

MELFORT, Sask. – Eight seniors who were sent to hospital last month after an apartment complex fire in Melfort, Saskatchewan have been released, including an 82-year-old woman who suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

More than twenty other residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in a second floor suite on Jan. 30 at Consolation Manor.

Residents who live on the first, third and fourth floors have been able to move back in.

“We wanted to get them out of the hotel, not because it’s expensive to stay in the hotel, but they’re away from their homes,” said Lorne Thomson, manager of the Melfort Housing Authority.

“We want to get them back in as quickly as possible. Now second floor, we’re working towards trying to get them in later next week.”

Damage to the suite where the fire started is extensive and renovations are expected to take months.

Residents say they feel lucky that no one died and that the evacuation went smoothly.
