City asks Saskatoon fire department to make $1.8M in budget cuts

SASKATOON – Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services has been asked by the city to find $1.8 million in savings from its budget.

It’s part of the City of Saskatoon’s civic service review.

The roads management program, the parks department and garbage and waste handlings programs are also tasked with the same initiative, find $1.4 million collectively in savings.

The City insists services will remain the same and the review is a way to find redundancies.

“Everything from housing inspections to needle pick up to all of the services they provide,” said Catherine Gryba, the city’s corporate performance general manager.

“Do they have to go through all of the steps they currently go through to provide an excellent service? Maybe not.”
