It was down to business on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 during the third day of competition at the Sochi games. The first medals were handed out and Canada was there as Mark McMorris captured a bronze medal in the men’s snowboard slopestyle event – despite having suffered a broken rib in January.
The medal was Canada’s first of the games.
In the women’s moguls, Montreal’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe led the way won Canada’s first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics, while her sister Chloe Dufour-Lapointe picked up a silver medal in the competition.

And figure skating was on the cusp of another scandal as a French newspaper reported allegations of a vote-swapping deal between Russia and the United States that could keep Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir from the top of the podium. The pair skated Saturday evening in the team skate event, where Canada sits in second place behind the Russians.
Also in action, the Canadian women’s hockey team began its quest for a fourth straight Olympic gold medal with a dominant 5-0 win over Switzerland.
The Canadians bombarded Switzerland’s goaltender Florence Schelling with 69 shots.
Flag-bearer Hayley Wickenheiser, scored a short-handed goal with Jocelyne Larocque, Tara Watchorn, Marie-Philip Poulin and Rebecca Johnston also scoring.
Goalie Charline Labonte earned the 14-save shutout in the victory.
