It was the first major running race of the season, and it proved to have its challenges.
Braving a mix of rain and snow, about 500 runners from the Okanagan, Alberta and the Lower Mainland hit the pavement for the Okanagan College half marathon in Kelowna on Sunday.
Many racers say the cool weather was just what they needed to propel them to the finish line of the 21 km race.
Runner Natasha Wood says the snow was an early morning surprise but she says the weather was conducive for running.
Fellow runner Al Gillespie echoes Wood’s thoughts, saying he was going to run the marathon regardless of the colder weather.
Okanagan College started the half marathon nine years ago.
Since then, a shorter 10 km option and a relay have been added.
All the proceeds from the event go back to recreation and wellness programs for Okanagan College students.
Prize money is offered for the top three finishers in the male and female divisions of the race.
First place winners receive $250.
