TORONTO — Katy Perry is the queen of social media.

The singer has become the first person to top 50 million followers on Twitter.

“What a raging Friday night! Made a sandwich. Watched The Business of Being Born. Hung out with a cat,” Perry tweeted on Feb. 1. “Oh yeah AND we grew to 50 million Katycats! Eh, regular day at the office.”

Perry boosted her total by 18 million in 2013.

Not far behind Perry is Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, who has 49.3 million followers.

The singer has been gaining followers since his arrest in Miami Beach on Jan. 23 and in Toronto on Jan. 30.

U.S. president Barack Obama is currently third with 41.3 million followers — only slightly ahead of Lady Gaga, who has 41 million.

Also in the top 10 are Taylor Swift (38.8 million), Britney Spears (35.7 million), Rihanna (33.9 million) and Justin Timberlake (30.4 million).

The next Canadian star on the list is Drake, who has 14 million followers and currently sits at No. 40.

It’s not surprising that singers dominate Twitter.

According to Billboard, more than a billion tweets about music were sent in 2013 — with 100 million of those coming from music-related accounts.

One-half of active Twitter users follow at least one music account.
