TORONTO — Maximilian Schell, who won Best Actor at the 1962 Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his role in Judgment at Nuremberg, is dead at 83.
Schell’s agent said Saturday morning the actor died overnight in Austria after a sudden illness.
Born in Vienna, Schell moved to the U.S. in 1955 and went on to earn Oscar nominations for 1975’s The Man in the Glass Booth and 1977’s Julie.

In 1993, he was awarded a Golden Globe for his supporting role in the TV movie Stalin.
Schell’s credits include 2008’s The Brothers Bloom and 1998’s Deep Impact. He also had a role in the made-in-Toronto 1990 movie The Freshman starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick.

The actor has numerous stage and TV credits, including a recurring role on the 1990 series Wiseguy.
He recently completed work on a French film.
Schell was godfather to Angelina Jolie.
