MOOSE JAW, Sask. – A military plane crashed near the 15 Wing air force base in Moose Jaw Friday afternoon, forcing the student pilot and instructor on board to make a controlled ejection.

They were flying a CT-156 Harvard II aircraft as part of a routine training mission and made the decision to eject when they determined that they would not be able to land the plane safely.

The two were picked up about five kilometers south of 15 Wing and the plane crashed into an empty field about 16 kilometers south of the base.

Both pilots were able to walk away after ejecting from the plane and were picked up by emergency response teams and taken to hospital for routine medical evaluation.

“As far as ejections go I don’t think you could ask for a better scenario,” said Capt. Thomas Edelson. “If you have to eject from an aircraft, this one went about as well as you could ask for. It certainly could have been worse.”
