HALIFAX – Municipal workers in Halifax are being asked to keep an eye out for wasteful or inappropriate spending and to send in confidential tips if they see any.
A note from city hall auditor general Larry Munroe was inserted into recent pay packets in all municipal departments.
Pauline Boudreau, the auditor general’s executive assistant, said Thursday that the move is a precursor to a tip line for the general public that Munroe plans to set up later this year.
The municipality is facing a projected $6.8-million fiscal imbalance this year even tough it is mandated by law to balance its budget.
Last year, Mayor Peter Kelly appealed to city workers to help find ways to eliminate the municipality’s projected budget shortfall for 2010-11.
The notes in workers’ pay envelopes resemble bookmarks and asks city staff to report in confidence anything they suspect might constitute a risk to taxpayers.
