KELOWNA, BC – A Pitt Bull Terrier was euthanized this morning after the owner voluntarily surrendered the animal to the Central Okanagan Regional District.

The dog was one of two owned by the same man who were involved in an attack on a Rhodesian Ridgeback Saturday at Bellevue Creek Elementary school in Kelowna, a School District #23 property that is now leased to a church.

The owner has been ticketed $200 for failing to control a dangerous dog and another $100 for having his other Pit Bull in the school park, an area where dogs are prohibited. That second dog has now been deemed a dangerous animal and must be muzzled and leashed at all times out of its enclosure.

A person who said they were the owner emailed a statement Thursday to Global Okanagan News, admitting responsibility for a “lapse in judgment” that lead to the off-leash dogs charging Cindy Switzer, her daughter and their dog Bella.

Bella, which now recovering at home, sustained severe injuries that required surgery and more than 100 stitches. The vet bill will be more than $1,200, an amount the Pit Bull owner has told Global he will pay for.

Switzer, a lifetime dog owner, says the horrific attack has left her, her daughter and dog shaken and afraid of other dogs.

She is hoping more stringent regulations will be introduced at the Regional District, which is looking to at least increase fines for dangerous dogs.
