On Tuesday afternoon, RCMP in Penticton, B.C., were called to an area near the city’s hospital due to an unspecified “incident.”

Mounties said the incident involved the area around Government Street, between Duncan Avenue E. and Carmi Avenue.

Police said they had received multiple 911 calls that a man was acting erratically and reportedly waving a knife around.

When officers showed up, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) said an “interaction” occurred between one officer and the suspect, which resulted in the officer discharging their pistol.

Police said the man was provided with first aid and rushed to the hospital but he died of his injuries.
The officer was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released, police confirmed.

No one else was injured.
