UPDATE: Trans-Canada Highway reopens after avalanche closure

CALGARY – The Trans-Canada Highway has reopened after being closed due to a high avalanche hazard.

Highway 1 was closed in both directions between Field, B.C. and Lake Louise on Monday afternoon.

Officials announced it had reopened at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Although drivers could take an alternative route on Highway 95 and Highway 93 to avoid the closure, many semi-truck drivers decided to wait it out instead of taking the longer route.

Many that spoke to Global News said they were used to these kind of closures in their line of work.

“When it’s zero or minus one [degrees]… I ran the mountains long enough that I know that when it’s that kind of temperature there’s a fairly high risk of avalanche control and bad roads,” says trucker Abe Wiebe.

Dozens of large trucks could be seen lining the roads of Lake Louise on Monday night, as drivers opted to stay the night instead of travel a riskier route.
