Peterborough man charged with 2 counts of attempted murder in intimate partner violence case

A man faces multiple attempted murder charges following what police say was an incident of intimate partner violence in downtown Peterborough, Ont., late Saturday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., emergency crews initially responded to a report of gunshots at the Brock Towers apartment building on Brock Street.

One person was struck by particles from a shotgun shell. They were treated at the scene by paramedics and released, police said.

A search of the area did not locate a suspect. He was later located on Sunday in the area of Simcoe and Aylmer streets and was arrested at gunpoint.

After the arrest, officers seized one spent gun shell casing and two unspent shells. A firearm was not located.

A 28-year-old Peterborough man was charged with two counts of attempt to commit murder using a restricted firearm or a prohibited firearm.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Sunday.

His name was not released to protect the identity of the victim, police said.

No other details were provided.

“There is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident,” police said.  “We would like the community for their understanding while police conducted their investigation.”
