REGINA – Influenza in Saskatchewan has claimed the lives of three people.

Two children and one adult have died after contracting the influenza virus, though all three people had underlying health conditions prior to contracting the flu.

So far there have been 161 confirmed cases influenza in Saskatchewan this season and seven people have been hospitalized with severe symptoms.

In an attempt to provide vaccination opportunities to as many people as possible, the Regina Qu’Apelle Health Region (RQHR) has scheduled eight additional flu vaccine clinics for January.

“We had over 500 people show up at the special clinic on December 30, so we want to assure the public there is more opportunity and ample supply of the vaccine,” said Dr. Maurice Hennink, Deputy Medical Health Office for RQHR. “We are very pleased that the public is showing such an interest and taking action to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

“We will continue to monitor the attendance, and if high demand continues, will continue to provide special clinics,” said Dr. Hennink. “This is the same influenza vaccine that we have been offering since October. If you’ve already received the vaccine, you need not get this one.”
