TORONTO — The No. 1 movie on the first day of 2014 was — like most of the people heading into cinemas across Canada — Frozen.
The animated adventure about two sisters and a loveable snowman started the new year at the top of the box office, earning $8.7 million in the U.S. and Canada., according to studio estimates.

Since its November debut, Frozen has grossed $539 million worldwide.

The movie features the voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad.
Close behind on New Year’s Day was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which added $7.8 million, and The Wolf of Wall Street, which made $5.7 million.

American Hustle earned $5.4 million on Jan. 1 and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues made $4.9 million.
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber’s huge fan base didn’t translate into ticket sales for his movie Believe, which was the No. 16 movie on New Year’s Day with only $293,321. Since opening on Christmas Day, it has earned only $5.2 million.
