The body of a missing boater in Mission, B.C. has been found and recovered.
In a news release, Mission RCMP say that “late Saturday afternoon, search and rescue crews managed to locate and recover the body of a boat operator who died in a boating accident in Nicomen Slough.”
Crews were called Friday, just before 6:30 p.m., after a small boat overturned near the Dewdney Bridge along the slough.
Police said the two were doing “donuts” in the water when both men were ejected from the boat.
Police said the missing boater, who is from Dewdney, wasn’t wearing a life-jacket at the time and alcohol may also have played a role in the incident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.
“This is a tragic end to what was supposed to be an enjoyable evening on the water,” Cpl. Harrison Mohr said.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and with the passenger that had been with him on the boat.
“As we enter peak boating season, please remember to always wear a life jacket when you’re on the water, as it only takes a second for something to go terribly wrong.”
Global News spoke with several community members at the scene where the boat overturned.
Three residents told Global News the missing man is Dana Sabo. One said they spoke with Dana’s wife early Saturday.
“Dana’s a super guy with a beautiful family, very tight-knit. And they fit in perfect into this community here, which is also a tight-knit community. Everybody knows everybody. And for this to happen to happen to him and his family is horrible,” Doug McNeill said.
“He had three beautiful boys. There’s going to be this monumental hole that’s going to be left with him not being here.”
