Bridgeland death ruled a homicide

CALGARY – Police are looking to the public for help as they investigate the death of a young man whose body was found in a car in Bridgeland last week.

Family of 19-year-old Anthony Fernandez reported him missing on Boxing Day. The next day, police discovered his body in a car parked in an alley in the 1200 block of Colgrove Ave. N.E.

An autopsy performed on Monday did determine the cause of death, but police are withholding that information.

“At this point we believe it is suspicious, we believe it is a homicide and the homicide unit is investigating,” says S/Sgt. Grant Miller.

Police are hoping anyone who had contact with Fernandez on December 24 will contact them.

“The investigation is very much in its early stages,” says Miller, who says it’s too early to tell if it was a random or targeted attack.

“Random attacks are rare,” adds Miller. “At this point, we haven’t ruled anything out and our investigation is moving forward from here.”

Calgary police and homicide detectives have been knocking on doors in Bridgeland, passing out flyers as they investigate the death.

Police think it’s possible Fernandez’s body was in the vehicle from December 24th onward.

Homicide detectives won’t say if they have a suspect or a possible motive, nor will they say if Fernandez had been involved in any criminal activity.

Police say the death has been hard on the victim’s family.

“Losing a loved one under tragic circumstances is never easy and its even more difficult over the Christmas season,” adds Miller.

Friends of Fernandez are raising money to help his mother pay for her son’s funeral.
