Two people are dead after shootings overnight in Toronto and Brampton.
Peel Regional Police said they were called to the area of Kennedy Road South and Stafford Drive in Brampton at around 4:16 a.m. Saturday.
“Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male inside of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital, where he has since been pronounced deceased,” Const. Tyler Bell told reporters at the scene.
He said the victim was a man in his 40s from Toronto.
Bell said investigators are confident that the shooting was a targeted incident, though it’s not yet confirmed if the victim was the intended target.
He said an after-hours bar in the area of the shooting “was quite busy” at the time and there was “substantial pedestrian and vehicular traffic.”
“It’s too early to tell right now of the vehicles, of the folks that were leaving, whether any were suspects or folks just fleeing gunfire,” Bell said.
“That’s part of the challenging work ahead of investigators right now.”
Bell said it’s not confirmed if the victim was ever inside of the after-hours bar or not, but said it’s a “fair assumption” to say the shooting may have been related to patrons at the establishment.
“That is going to be something that we’re obviously interested to look into,” he said.
Bell said the shooting is “quite troubling” and happened in a busy area.
“There’s residential buildings in the vicinity here,” he said.
“There’s people going about their day-to-day business. It’s quite concerning for members of our community, to go about their business, to come to their local establishments here where they come regularly and find out that something horrific has happened, such as a shooting, and someone’s lost their life. It’s pretty concerning.”
Bell said officers are out “in full force” trying to figure out what happened and if they learn of a risk to the community, they will make that public.
Female killed in Toronto shooting
Meanwhile, at 5:07 a.m., Toronto police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the area of Eglinton Avenue West and Northcliffe Boulevard.
Toronto police said a female victim was found with injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said there is no suspect information in that case either.
