A large plume of smoke could be seen from kilometres away as a grass fire broke out in a farmer’s field between the southeast edge of Edmonton and Beaumont on Thursday afternoon.

The fire was south of 41st Avenue SW and north of Township Road 510, between the Nisku Spine Road and 50th Street.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said the first call about the grass fire came in just before 4 p.m.

Crews arrived on scene 10 minutes later. As of around 5:30 p.m., there were nine crews, or about three dozen firefighters, on scene.

In an update just after 7 a.m. Friday, the city said there were still two fire crews at the scene.

“The fire is certainly smaller than it was,” said Rowan Anderson, a senior communications advisor with the city. “No formal under control time yet though, given the dry conditions.”

The fire is in a rural area with no hydrant access, so tanker trucks have been travelling back and forth between the city and area all afternoon with water to douse the flames.

Other municipal fire departments responded to the fire as well, including from Leduc County and Nisku.

The city said Friday morning that no other municipal departments remained at the scene.
