A wildfire that broke out Monday northeast of the Jasper townsite is now contained.
In a social media post late Monday afternoon, Parks Canada said its fire crews and the Jasper Fire Department were responding to a wildfire around the transfer station, which is about nine kilometres northeast of Jasper, Alta.
Smoke was visible from Highway 16.
In an update just before 7 p.m., Jasper National Park officials said the fire was contained.
“Crews are now working on extinguishing the fire within the perimeter,” read a post on Facebook at 6:50 p.m. Monday.
“The Jasper Fire Department is assessing the presence of hazardous materials in the recycling piles and determining the best method of extinguishing them.”
Officials said they were able to quickly respond to the fire because the public reported it early.
“Timely reporting and response time are crucial, especially in windy conditions.”
There is no word on what sparked the blaze. Jasper National Park said more information would be released when it is available.
