Husband charged with murder after wife dies at Vaughan home: police

A man has been charged with second-degree murder after his wife’s death at their home in Vaughan, police say.

York Regional Police said they were called to a home on Isa Court, near Langstaff Road and Highway 27, at around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said a woman in her 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially said she had suffered stab wounds.

Police have since identified her as 64-year-old Estella Wheeler.

She died despite life-saving efforts from first responders, police said.

A suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Trevor Wheeler, 68, has since been charged with second-degree murder.

A police spokesperson confirmed to Global News that Trevor and Estella were married.

Global News has also learned that Estella was a teacher with the Toronto District School Board and taught at Africentric Alternative School in the Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue West area.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you about the sudden passing of Ms. Estella Wheeler, our beloved Grade 7/8 Teacher for more than seven years,” a letter from the school’s principal Hugh Reynolds to parents and guardians said.

“During her time at our school, she developed strong relationships with students and staff, and will be remembered as an incredibly kind and giving person who was friends with everyone.”

Reynolds said supports are available for staff and students as needed, especially those who were in Estella’s class.

“School social workers were at school today to speak with students and staff to provide support and to encourage sharing thoughts and memories of Ms. Wheeler,” the letter said.

“This support will be available as long as there is a need.”

Reynolds also said there are supports for parents in helping their children process Estella’s death.

“The Africentric community will come together to show our respect and support for the family based on their wishes in the weeks ahead,” the letter said.

Anyone with information on the case was asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
