Pet proofing the home for the holidays

SASKATOON – Christmas is 22 sleeps away and by now, people have or are getting ready to set up their tree and decorate the home while keeping pets at bay.

Keeping furry companions away from those festive decorations can be a challenge.

Pets are curious by nature, so when something new goes in the living room it’s tough to keep the tree decorated and upright.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“You can look at a Christmas tree and see that it actually looks like a giant cat toy in the eyes of your pet, so there are a lot of temptations, there’s a lot of dangly balls for them to want to bite and chew,” said Tricia McAuley with the Saskatoon SPCA.

It might look cute and be funny at first but it’s no laughing matter if a pet gets a hold of the wrong item.

“Make sure your cats and dogs don’t get into the tinsel, if they eat it, it can cause a lot of harm. There’s a lot of holiday plants that can potentially pose a risk to your animals,” said McAuley.

Keeping them safe during the holidays can be a challenge but it can be done with planning and products.

“The taste deterrent basically deters your dog or your cat from biting say on cords anything like that, the smell deterrent if you have a favorite plant or something you don’t want your dog or cats to go onto,” said Henry Szabo from Critters Pet Health Store.

A healthy pet can make all the difference for a safe and happy holiday season.
