Calgary mother arrested after 7-year-old son’s death

CALGARY – Police have arrested a 44-year-old woman in connection with the death of her son, after she allegedly gave him holistic treatments for an illness but didn’t seek medical treatment.

Police rushed to a Beltline basement suit in March after receiving reports of a young boy having a seizure.

The seven-year-old was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Due to the condition the boy was in when he arrived at hospital, the Homicide Unit was called to investigate.

An autopsy revealed he died as a result of a strep infection, which is often treatable with antibiotics such as penicillin.

Detectives claim the boy, who lived with his mother, was not taken for medical help despite his deteriorating condition.

“[The mother] has a legal requirement and that is she get medical attention through traditional western medicine to deal with the illness,” says S/Sgt. Michael Cavilla from the Calgary Police Homicide Unit. “It was a bacterial infection which could be easily treated with antibiotics like penicillin.”

It’s alleged the victim, Ryan Lovett, was given holistic remedies and was bedridden for up to 10 days prior to his death.

Police say after speaking with medical experts and the Crown Prosecutor’s Office, they arrested the boy’s mother. The boy’s father was estranged from him.

Tamara Sophia Lovett, 44, has been charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life and criminal negligence causing death.
