A gas leak on private land was responsible for a mysterious bubbling puddle next to the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary.

Rocky View fire crews responded to the site on Sunday.

They found a patch of oozing, bubbling mud between the highway and fence line on the north side of Highway 1, about 500 metres west of Jumping Pound Road.

A leaking gas line was to blame.

Fire officials say there was no risk of an explosion or air contamination. The pipeline was shutdown as a precaution.

Alberta Agriculture licenses the line and says it is now repaired. Officials plan to inspect the repair.

The gas line is owned by a farmer who obtained the rights to tap low-pressure gas from a non-producing well on his land.

The well was drilled in 1929.

There are between 50 and 100 similar private wells in operation in Alberta.
