The City of Surrey is planning a comprehensive project to improve a section of road where one teenager was killed and two others were injured in September.

The city plans to install a signalled crosswalk on 128th Street between 72nd and 68th avenues. Spokesperson Amanda Silvers said the plan will be determined prior to Christmas and then the timeline for the work will be determined as part of the plan.

Silvers said the city is working with Princess Margaret Secondary School and the surrounding area to determine what additional safety improvements will be made, but plans will include more than just the crosswalk.

On September 18, three teenage girls were struck by a motorcycle as they crossed the street outside of Princess Margaret Secondary School.

One girl, 16-year-old Amarpreet Sivia, was killed. The other two, Jaspreet Dhami and Shahana Samira, were injured when the motorcycle collided with them.

The teen trio were jaywalking across 128th Street, a common practice by the high school students, at lunch to get a slice of pizza when they were struck.

A report commissioned by the City of Surrey in 2010, addressed the issue of road safety around the school. At the time, the city decided a crosswalk wasn’t warranted.
