CALGARY- Elections officials are trying to track down a ballot box that went missing during Monday’s election.
After voting stations closed and the boxes were being transported, a returning officer noticed that one box had disappeared while being moved from the Foothills Hospital to Father Lacombe High School.
The box contained 43 ballots: 16 for mayor, 15 for councillors, eight for public school trustee and four for separate school trustee.
However, returning officer Barb Clifford says those votes would not have made a difference in the final results of any riding.
“These 43 ballots should not affect the outcome of any of the results. However, the Elections Office is working hard to recover the missing ballot box and add the votes to the official results.”
Ward 5 councillor Ray Jones said he’s confused as to how something like this could happen.
“How do you lose a ballot box?” he said. “I mean, they’re bigger than a ping pong ball, and you would think that you’re moving from one site to another you would keep control of it, so it’s kind of puzzling.”
The elections office is now investigating the disappearance, and anyone with information is asked to call 403-476-4106.
