Delta Hospital forces 90-year-old woman to take taxi in middle of the night

A visually impaired 90-year-old woman says Delta Hospital forced her to leave the emergency room and take a taxi home in the middle of the night wearing only her pajamas.

“The nurse said you’re going home, you’re discharged, and I said ‘what?'” said Vivian Fitzpatrick.

“She said ‘the doctor said there’s nothing wrong with you’…I was too shocked to say anything. Honestly, I didn’t even say I had no clothes. I was just shocked.”

Fitzpatrick was discharged at 1:30 a.m. Delta Hospital ordered a taxi and woke up her in-home caregiver to let her know she was coming home. Fitzpatrick says the only thing the hospital gave her was a pair of slippers and a single white sheet to keep her warm on the rainy night. Her ordeal got worse during the cab ride.

“I felt something wet in my arm, and thought I must have gotten something wet in the rain,” said Fitzpatrick.

But it turned out it was blood spilling out from where hospital staff had put the intravenous.

“The white sheet is full of blood, and I took it out. I was so tired I lay down on the bed when I got home, and I got blood over the sheets, so [the caregiver] had to change the beds and wash the sheets.”

Fitzpatrick says she will not return to the hospital, even though she knows it could endanger her health.

WATCH: A day later, Fitzpatrick’s family still looking for answers

“We are working with the family through the Patient Care and Quality Office to ensure this type of situation does not occur again and appreciate their support and understanding through this process.”

Fitzpatrick’s daughter Paddy Munro said the hospital told her a junior nurse was to blame for the mistake.

Not surprisingly, she says the apology isn’t enough, and has filed a grievance with the Patient Care Quality Office.

“My mom and I want to make it very clear we are not blaming the nurses and doctors because we’ve seen how busy they are,” says Munro, who added that she was not contacted that night even though she is listed as the primary contact.

“But there’s no reason they could possibly give me that would rationalize why they treated my mother this way.”
