CALGARY- A massive cleanup is underway at the site of a train derailment in southeast Calgary.
It happened in Alyth Yard near 19th Avenue and 15th Street S.E. around 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
CP Rail says the train was moving at a slow speed when eight cars carrying a diluting agent used in oil pipelines jumped the tracks.
Six of the cars involved overturned, but there was no leakage from fallen cars.
There was also a break in a natural gas line, forcing police to close Blackfoot Trail, 15th Street and 9th Avenue S.E.
Crews also took the precaution of evacuating 12 nearby businesses and 142 homes.
The natural gas line was eventually shut-down.
Officials say the product in the derailed cars is a flammable and volatile hydrocarbon used as a diluting agent in pipelines.
CP Rail brought has brought in specialty equipment and heavy machinery to safely off-load the product from the train cars.
When the product is completely removed the cars will be righted.
Blackfoot Trail and 9th Avenue are now open to traffic, only 15th Street between 9th Avenue and Blackfoot Trail remains closed due to operational demands.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the derailment.
