Gay pride flag burning in Fort McMurray under investigation

EDMONTON – Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating after reports that two flags from a gay pride event in Fort McMurray were burned outside the business where the event was being held.

RCMP were contacted about an alleged flag burning incident that happened in the evening of July 27 near a pub on Hardin Street in downtown Fort McMurray.

The initial investigation indicates that a group of individuals stole two flags from a gay pride event being held at Bailey’s Pub around 11 p.m. and then lit them on fire.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say the incident is currently being classified as a Mischief, but – depending on the findings of the investigation – it could be looked at as a Hate Crime.

“Right now it has elements that may come in the investigation could lead us to investigate it in that way,” explained Cst. Christina Wilkins. “It’s too early for me say.”
