High River flood victims hold protest outside Premier’s Calgary office

CALGARY – There are still a lot of unanswered questions and some anger over the compensation of flood victims in southern Alberta.

About 50 frustrated High River flood victims gathered at Premier Alison Redford’s Calgary-Elbow constituency office on Monday

Protesters held signs and voiced concerns over the province’s plan to help those impacted by flooding.

They say compensation from the province doesn’t go far enough, and are concerned with the government’s decision to provide homeowners only with enough funding to return their homes to “a basic level of finish.”

The government released more details on its flood assistance and mitigation measures on Sunday.

“It will cover restoration of your home to a functional standard but not cover premium upgrades,” says Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs.

However, some taxpayers do feel flood victims are being fairly compensated.

The protesters outside Redford’s office found themselves occasionally heckled by passersby who felt they are demanding too much.

Redford was not in the office at the time of Monday’s protest.
