Vigorous wildfire prompts evacuation alert

PENTICTON — A large wildfire is burning near Penticton’s Dominion Radio Telescope Observatory, about 5 kilometers southwest of Okanagan Falls.

The report of the blaze came in at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fire officials describe the fire as vigorous, with wind quickly expanding the blaze to 50 hectares in size.

Fire Information Officer, Melissa Welsh, says the fire is between rank 3 and rank 4 on a 6 rank scale.

More than 30 Firefighters, helicopters and seven air tankers are all on scene. In total 31 personnel are battling the blaze.

Twelve homes on the Willowbrook Road, Yellowbrick Road and Fairview-White Lake Road district are under an evacuation alert.

The cause is under investigation.
