It was an emotional candle light service on Saturday afternoon marking six decades since the Korea war ended in 1953 after three years of fighting.
Local veterans and government officials gathered at the Brookside Cemetary Korean Veterans Memorial in the Military Field of Honour to remember the battle that included 26,000 Canadian troops and 516 who lost their lives.
“There’s a poem that says ‘lest we forget’ and this is our way of keeping their memories alive and paying homage to what they did, what we all did when we were over there,” said Dan Lafreniere, a local veteran.
The 60th anniversary also recognizes the designation by the Canadian government of 2013 as the year of the Korea war veteran.
It’s a designation welcomed by veterans of what’s often referred to as ‘the forgotten war’.
