Vancouver Police officers help woman give birth to twins in DTES

A woman is recovering in hospital this morning after giving birth to twins near a building that had just been demolished in the Downtown Eastside.

The three storey building at 451 Powell Street across from Oppenheimer Park was condemned and apparently vacant, but firefighters and city engineers closed off the street after the building showed signs of collapse. Crews demolished it overnight.

Vancouver Police say two officers were on traffic duty outside the building when a passerby came to tell them a woman was in pain nearby and apparently in labour.

By the time officers arrived on scene, the woman had already delivered a baby and was holding it. The officers then helped her deliver the second baby. She had a boy and a girl.

Paramedics were called to the scene right away, and police say the woman became distraught and they had to restrain her.

All three were taken to hospital, and are all doing fine.

Police say the woman apparently lives in the area. They are not sure if any mental health or addiction issues are involved.
