Photo: Sidewalk buckles in Port Coquitlam due to hot weather, some records broken

There were no temperature records broken in Port Coquitlam today, but the heat was enough to buckle the sidewalk in front of Mike Farnworth’s house.

The MLA for Port Coquitlam tweeted a photo of the sidewalk in front of his house (see above), where the intense heat has buckled the concrete and workers have put caution tape around the site.

Global Okanagan meteorologist Wesla Wong says we were close to breaking temperature records in the Lower Mainland on Sunday.

Abbotsford did break a record with 33.2 degrees; the old record was 33.0.

Squamish also broke a record at 34.2 degrees, and Chetwynd also broke a record with 28 degrees.

27 degrees was the highest temperature recorded at the Vancouver International Airport.

We will likely see more records broken on Monday as it is expected to get even hotter with a very strong upper level ridge bringing a warm air mass from the southern part of the United States. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

The Wildlife Management Branch is warning people about the dangers of campfires and open flames when it is so hot and dry outside. The forest fire risk is very high right now, and if you see smoke or flames call *5555 on your cell or 1-800-663-5555.

Temperatures are expected to come down to seasonal averages by Wednesday.
