Special committee making Saskatchewan roads safer

SASKATOON – A tragic weekend on Saskatchewan roads. Six lives were lost in five different fatal accidents. After holding public hearings late last month, today the “Special Committee on Traffic Safety” converged in Saskatoon to discuss ways to make roads in the province safer.

2012 was the worst year on record for fatalities on Saskatchewan highways. Prompting the provincial government to form a special traffic committee.

“Is it imperative to do it now absolutely after last year, but after this weekend it’s still pretty clear people don’t take the message to heart. You don’t drink and drive and people in this province think, I believe people think it’s a right to drive. It’s a privilege,” said Darryl Hickie, All-Party Safety Committee Chair.

The six fatalities on Saskatchewan roads this weekend hits close to home for committee members.

With almost 800 thousand licensed Saskatchewan drivers, the committee is going to six locations across the province to listen and gather public input in an effort to make roads safer.

“Well definitely we’re talking about the 5 perimeters, drunk driving .. impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, intersection safety and wildlife collisions. How are those 5 major factors going to be dealt with in the province,” said Hickie.

The conversation continues in Saskatoon tomorrow with the provincial tour wrapping up next week. A report is expected to be tabled by August 30th.
