WINNIPEG — Police taped off part of a Winnipeg neighbourhood on Thursday afternoon after a suspicious discovery in a Crescentwood yard.
A construction company was working on the home near Dudley Avenue and Guelph Street when a worker uncovered what appeared to resemble a military explosive.
The contractor says he was working with a skid steer in the back yard when he drove over it.
“It just looked like something really old,” said Peter Schilling, who found the smoke bomb. “It wasn’t set off by us driving over it with the skid-steer. It wasn’t set off by digging it up so just thought it was something that had been there for a long time.”
Military members quickly joined police on scene before removing the object from the area.
“The military described it as a smoke bomb, for practice I guess,” said Wes Friesen, who called 911 after seeing the cylindrical device.
Some houses in the area were evacuated as a precaution.
