Deadly crash in Inglewood sparks calls for change

CALGARY- There are calls for change at an uncontrolled intersection in Inglewood, after a pedestrian was hit and killed on Tuesday afternoon.

The 22-year-old man was crossing 12 Street at 10 Avenue S.E. when he was hit by a cement truck. Witnesses say he was wearing headphones, and crossed in the middle of the block.

So far, four pedestrians have been killed this year on Calgary streets, and police warn that anyone walking while wearing headphones are at risk.

“Some of those ear buds are pretty tight in your ears, so if you can’t hear at least have your head up and be looking around,” suggests Const. Jim Lebedeff from the Traffic Unit. “When coming up to a corner you are going to cross, please have a look for vehicles, make sure [drivers] know you want to cross…and make some eye contact with those drivers.”

Following Tuesday’s fatality, members of the Inglewood Community Association say the intersection on 12 Street is unsafe, and that it has been the site of several collisions and near-misses. With traffic lights just one block away on 9 Ave., they believe there is an easy solution.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I would like to see a pedestrian barrier, basically saying ‘sidewalk closed during rush hour,’” suggests Bill Bakelaar, adding he never crosses at 10 Ave.

“I take that extra time and go up to the lights, where I know it’s safe and I know people are paying attention.”

The community association is considering making a presentation to the city and police, hoping it leads to changes.
