Kinky Boots, Matilda lead Tony nominations

TORONTO — A draq queen in bright red boots will take on a little girl with extraordinary powers at the 2013 Tony Awards.

Kinky Boots and Matilda lead the nominees announced Tuesday for the awards honouring the year’s best Broadway productions.

The two musicals are competing in categories including Best Musical, Book, Score, Direction, Choreography, Scenic Design and Costume Design.

Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 film of the same name, opened April 4 on Broadway. It features songs by ’80s pop star Cyndi Lauper and a book by Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein.

The musical about a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner earned a total of 13 nominations, beating Matilda by one.

Matilda, based on the novel by Roald Dahl, is about an gifted young girl with special powers. It opened in London in 2011 and on Broadway on April 11.

Kinky Boots and Matilda are up against Bring It On and A Christmas Story.

Matilda‘s Bernie Carvel and Kinky Boots stars Billy Porter and Stark Sands are nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.

Best Play nominees are The Assembled Parties, Lucky Guy, The Testament of Mary and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

Stars like Tom Hanks, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce and Tom Sturridge are nominated for Best Actor in a Play while Laurie Metcalf, Holland Taylor and Cicely Tyson are among nominees for Best Actress in a Play.

Shows with multiple nominations include A Christmas Story: The Musical, Motown: The Musical, Pippin, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The latter three are up against Annie for Best Revival of a Musical.

Golden Boy leads the play categories with eight nominations, including Best Revival of a Play, followed by Lucky Guy with six.

Nominations in 26 categories were announced in New York by Broadway veteran Sutton Foster and Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

The least competitive category is Best Lighting Design of a Musical, where Kenneth Posner earned three of four nominations.

The 67th annual Tony Awards ceremony will take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 9.
