A section of Highway 401 near Grafton was closed for more than 12 hours following a hay truck fire.
Northumberland OPP says the eastbound lanes were closed near Vernonville Road just before 4 a.m. as firefighters from both Alnwick-Haldimand and Cramahe townships quickly put out the blaze in the cab of the transport truck.
However, the fire quickly spread to dozens of hay bales. Crews spent much of the day dealing with smouldering hay which spread across the highway.
Police say the driver was not injured and no other vehicles were involved.
Traffic was diverted along Lyle Street. The westbound lanes weren’t impacted, but OPP cautioned about traffic slowing down to watch at the scene.
One eastbound lane re-opened around 6:30 a.m. but the other didn’t reopen until 4 p.m.
