A donation jar collecting money for two African brothers was stolen from Rideau Acres Campground, last Wednesday – Aug 8, 2017

Management at Rideau Acres Campground, near Kingston, Ont., are hoping a female suspect seen on surveillance stealing a donation jar will have a change of heart and return it.

The theft, which was caught by surveillance cameras, occurred on the morning of Aug. 2.

“She was in here a good 10 minutes before she decided to slip it under her jacket,” campground manager, Sue Dick said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

According to Dick, the suspect checked into the campground late Monday night with a man. The pair spent the day Tuesday at the campground, and on Wednesday, surveillance footage shows what appears to be the woman taking the jar before checkout.

Dick estimates the jar contained nearly $300, and was set up by a former employee to help pay the secondary school tuition of two Kenyan brothers, whom the employee, Cameron Dick, taught while on an internship in 2012.

“To steal from someone who’s in such need — I mean, it’s their future that’s on the line. If they don’t get these funds, they’re not able to continue with school,” said a frustrated Cameron.

Images of the female suspect were posted on the campground’s Facebook page, which have been shared more than 3,000 times since Sunday.

“Somebody out there knows who she is, so I’m hoping somebody comes forward and gives us some information,” Dick said.
