Eskimos linebacker Cory Greenwood out for season
WATCH ABOVE: The Edmonton Eskimos have dealt a major blow in the first week of training camp. The team's high-profile offseason acquisition, Cory Greenwood, will not play a single game this season. Jack Haskins reports – Jun 1, 2017

The plans for Cory Greenwood were big. Now they have been scrapped, or more accurately, postponed.

The Edmonton Eskimos signed the Canadian linebacker in the off-season as part of a plan to switch the ratio, making the WIL linebacker a Canadian position while going all American on the defensive line.

Greenwood chose the Eskimos as a free agent because they had the best chance to win. If they do win, Greenwood will be a spectator.

“I was really excited to come here, I know how good this team’s going to be,” Greenwood said. “The offence is going to be amazing, I just wanted to be that piece on defense to come in and make some plays, get off the field and watch these guys work. It’s one of those things that you think it’s never going to happen to you until it does and then your season is kind of taken away from you. It’s one of those things that happens and you just got to deal with it.”

Greenwood says he will need approximately 13 months of recovery and rehab, his plan is to return and play next season.

The native of Kingston, Ont. played three seasons with Kansas City in the NFL before joining the Argos in 2014. Over the last two seasons in Toronto, he missed 16 games due to injuries.

Another Canadian player was missing from practice on Thursday. Receiver Shamawd Chambers did not take part after leaving early on Wednesday.

American receiver Brandon Zylstra was on the field for a short time but did not take part in any drills before heading back to the dressing room.  Running back Kendial Lawrence walked off the field with trainers at the end of practice limping on his left leg.

Tomorrow the Eskimos will hold their Mock Game on The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.
