Four people were killed and another four injured in a violent head-on collision on Highway 30 West in Châteauguay early Tuesday morning.

The accident took place just after midnight when a car driving eastbound on a westbound lane crashed into an SUV.

Three people were in the car, 80-year-old Pierre Julien Proulx, his 82-year-old wife, Raymonde Bouchard Proulx, and their 14-year-old grandson who was in the passenger seat.

All three were killed.

Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Daniel Thibaudeau said there were five people in the SUV, heading towards Ontario.

The passenger in the front seat, 56-year-old Carole Downer, also died in the crash.

“The driver of the SUV, who is a woman, was unable to avoid the collision, it happened fairly suddenly,” said Thibaudeau. “The impact was rather violent so those type of impacts don’t usually leave for much chance.”

People who use the highway regularly said it’s easy to get confused at that intersection.

“It could be confusing,” said Diane Legault, who works nearby. “You have to be very careful, because there’s an arrow that says to turn left, but it’s [the entrance] at the other light … I could understand how people could do that.”

Some said better signage is needed.

“Something absolutely has to be done,” said Raymond Belanger, who lives nearby. “Change the location of the entrance or exit. I don’t know how they should do it, but at least put signage that is more clear.”

Police said they are still investigating how exactly the driver made the tragic mistake.

Highway 30 was reopened at 6 a.m.
