Montrealer horrified after she claims she found worms inside Amira nuts

Christina Dessilas says she is disgusted after she bought a bag of nuts on Monday at Amira in Ville Saint-Laurent, Que.

She couldn’t believe what she found inside.

“I noticed one of them looked funny. It was a hazelnut,” she said. “And that’s when I saw the maggot inside.”

What’s worse, she said, is the response her husband got from the store Wednesday morning when he dropped by to show them what they found.

“He told her that this was unacceptable, and she told him to then call a lawyer and she’d be waiting for a lawyer to contact them,” Dessilas said. “And she then tossed the bag back at him.”

But Amira disputes that claim.

On Wednesday afternoon, Global News went to the warehouse on Henri-Bourassa Boulevard.

Global News bought a bag of nuts and also found worms inside of them.

When Global News confronted the store, they claimed it was an isolated incident and they were investigating.

“This is an issue that concerns only our little department here. It has nothing to do with the wholesale or our packaging,” said operations manager, Lia Martone.

Amira said they will be contacting their suppliers and cleaning out their shelves before selling to any other customers.

Dessilas said the store offered her a refund on Wednesday afternoon, but she said that’s not what she wants.

“They should be more aware and they should have a strict policy for that,” she said.

Global News reached out to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and while it would not release details of its inspections, it did confirm that: “CFIA is satisfied that the company is in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.”
