Okanagan Christmas shoppers warned to beware of theives

Mall parking lots can be a goldmine for thieves this time of year and Kelowna RCMP wants to remind shoppers to protect themselves and their purchases.

“Don’t buy your gifts twice and don’t be an easy target,” Colleen Cornock of the Kelowna RCMP Crime Prevention Team said. “When shopping this holiday season be sure to lock your vehicle, remove valuables, like Christmas presents, from your vehicle or keep them out of sight and be sure to report suspicious activity to your local police.”

To help reduce gift theft,  Citizens On Patrol (COP) volunteers with the Kelowna Regional RCMP are now patrolling Kelowna area malls and store parking lots.

“The general public can expect to see our highly visible COP volunteers patrolling parking lots in marked volunteer vehicles and handing out “DON’T BE AN EASY target” Holiday Edition tip cards,” RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said. “These men and women have generously donated their time during the weeks leading up to Christmas to help ensure that your gifts make it all the way under the tree.”
