Winnipeg Blue Bombers not letting playoff loss define season

WINNIPEG — For a team branded in blue, Winnipeg’s CFL club is now feeling it too.

“I just play (the game) back over and over again,” said Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Maurice Leggett. “It’s just a tough one to swallow.

The Bombers were sent packing with Sunday’s 32-31 loss to the B.C. Lions in the CFL Western Semi-Final. It’s another season sliced short but not as early as the others.

“Last year, this time, I was already home,” said Bombers defensive back Jamaal Westerman.

Players are proud of their performance this season. After all, it was the first time Winnipeg cracked the playoffs in five years.

“At the end of the day, we had a great season,” said Bombers kicker Justin Medlock. “We just have to take the positives and move on.”

The club will look a little different next year with several players becoming free agents. Among those without a contract is Matt Nichols. The quarterback says negotiations have yet to cross his mind but that he would like to stick around Winnipeg.

“This is my best professional season,” said Nichols.

Fans certainly hope so he can help the Bombers pick up where they left off.

“Guys will come back hungry next year,” said Nichols. “Sometimes it takes getting to this point to learn how to finish.”
