A new poll released on year before the next municipal election shows Don Iveson is in a strong position to have a second term as Edmonton mayor.

The Mainstreet poll finds Iveson has a 52 per cent approval rating, and would lead an election campaign with several challengers with 42 per cent of the decided vote.

According to Mainstreet, Mayor Iveson would win a hypothetical race against former mayor Stephen Mandel, former city councillor Karen Leibovici, and current councillors Michael Oshry and Mike Nickel. In the poll, Iveson had 42 per cent of the decided vote, with Mandel finishing second with 34 per cent.

“The top issue in the city so far is city spending, flagged by 17 per cent of Edmontonians as their top issue in a mayoral campaign. Transit and ‘something else’ were both tied at 12 per cent, with taxes at 11 per cent,” Maintreet Research president Quito Maggi said.

Forty-two per cent of those who took part in the survey said they are not getting good value for the city taxes they pay, while 31 per cent said they are getting good value.

Maggi said this could be an issue to pay attention to as the mayoral campaign approaches.

Iveson was elected as Edmonton’s 35th mayor in October 2013 with 62 per cent of the vote. He first got into municipal politics in 2007 when he was elected as Ward 5 city councillor.

The next municipal election will be held Monday, Oct. 16, 2017.
